OCT. 9, 2020 Upcoming 2020 Product Calendar — The U.S. Census Bureau has posted anticipated release
dates for each regular and recurring statistical product scheduled for
release in 2020.
These products are listed in the Census Bureau’s online product
calendar, which is updated as needed throughout the year. 2020 Census 2020 Census Paid Temporary Workers — Each Tuesday, the Census Bureau will
release the total number of 2020 Census paid temporary workers that earned
any pay. The data tables include national totals for all 50 states and the
District of Columbia. (Scheduled for release each Tuesday.) American Community Survey 2019 American Community Survey Public Use Microdata Sample — The Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS)
files for the 2019 American Community Survey 1-year statistics allow users to
create custom estimates and tables that are not available through ACS
pre-tabulated data products. The files contain data on approximately 1% of
the U.S. population while protecting the confidentiality of survey
respondents. The files show population and housing characteristics down to
Public Use Microdata Areas, which are special nonoverlapping areas that
partition each state into contiguous geographic units containing no fewer
than 100,000 people each. Users can create tabulations through their own
software or through the microdata access tool on data.census.gov. Supporting
documentation and resources such as the PUMS Handbook, webinars and more are
available in the new PUMS
section of census.gov/acs. (Schedule for release Oct.
15.) Commuting Patterns of Older Workers in the United States,
2013-2017 — The
U.S. Census Bureau is scheduled to release the report “Commuting Patterns of
Older Workers in the United States, 2013-2017” that describes commuting
patterns of older workers in the United States, based on data from the 5-year
2013-2017 American
Community Survey (ACS). Older workers are a diverse
group, but understanding how their commuting behavior varies from that
of younger workers helps planners and policymakers accommodate the needs of
this growing share of the working population. (Tentatively scheduled for
release in October.) Demographic Census Bureau Releases New Technical Notes on Select Topics in
International Censuses — The U.S. Census Bureau is releasing a new technical note on
disclosure avoidance as part of the series of technical notes on Select Topics in International Censuses.
This brief provides National Statistical Offices (NSOs) with information on
types of disclosure events that may occur and outlines the four disclosure
avoidance phases that an NSO could go through in a census to ensure good data
stewardship. (Scheduled for release Oct. 15.) World Statistics Day — The U.S. Census Bureau will participate in the third
observance of World Statistics Day on October 20 as part of a global
collective effort to celebrate the importance of statistical data sharing.
This year’s theme is “Connecting the world with data we can trust” to
reflect on the importance of trust, authoritative data, innovation and the
public good in national statistical systems. (Scheduled for release Oct. 20.) Story Map: An Aging World 2020 — The U.S. Census Bureau will release a
new visualization that combines maps, charts, and text to illustrate trends
on population aging in 2020 and projected patterns in 2050 for world regions
and countries. The Story Map also discusses fertility and mortality declines,
the demographic transition, older dependency ratios, sex ratios, healthy life
expectancy, and more. The Story Map format guides users through a data-driven
narrative where linked components on the text and figures allow users to
explore and understand key analytical concepts by interactively navigating
through maps, revealing layers of data as they do so. See link for
the Story Map on the Census Bureau’s website. (Tentatively scheduled for
release in October.) Household Pulse Survey — The experimental Household Pulse
Survey is an effort by the Census Bureau and other federal statistical
agencies to document temporal trends in how individuals are experiencing
business curtailment and closures, stay-at-home orders, school closures,
changes in the availability of consumer goods and patterns, and other abrupt
and significant changes to American life. The Census Bureau began data
collection for phase 2 on Aug. 19. Biweekly results will be available through
the Household Pulse Survey Interactive Tool, detailed tables and a public use data file
on the website Sept. 9 through Nov. 4, 2020. Phase 2 includes new questions
on Social Security benefits, post-secondary education,
evictions/foreclosures, mental health services and Supplemental Nutrition
Assistance Program (SNAP) and unemployment benefits. Economic New Earnings and Employment Data for College Graduates — The U.S. Census Bureau will release
new data on labor market outcomes for college graduates as part of Post-Secondary Employment Outcomes (PSEO)
statistics. These new data feature institutions from the City University of
New York system, State University of New York system, Pennsylvania State
University System and Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. The PSEO Explorer visualization tool will be
updated to include these institutions, and feature enhanced search features
for specific majors. With this release, PSEO will also be available on the
Census API. (Scheduled for release Oct. 15.) A Preliminary Investigation into the Metro Area
Job-to-Job Flows and Earnings Data in the Manufacturing Sector —
The U.S. Census Bureau and the Local Employment Dynamics (LED) Partnership in
collaboration with the Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER) and
the Labor Market Institute (LMI) presents, “A Preliminary Investigation into
the Metro Area Job-to-Job Flows and Earnings Data in the Manufacturing
Sector.” This presentation will look at hires and separation rates from
job-to-job flows and flows from and to persistent non-employment from 2001 to
2017 in the Detroit metropolitan area. Additional insight will be given on
origin and destination job earnings, flows into and out of the Detroit metro
area, industry sector flows, and analysis on worker age, education, and
gender. (Scheduled for release Oct. 15.) Census Business Builder version 3.2 — This month, the U.S. Census Bureau
will release the version 3.2 update to Census Business Builder (CBB). The
latest version includes new data from the 2014-2018 American Community Survey
5-Year Estimates, updated data from the Quarterly Workforce Indicators (QWI)
and the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages,
and new functionality for both the Small Business Edition and the Regional
Analyst Edition. (Scheduled for release on Oct. 22) Small Business Pulse Survey — The
experimental Small Business Pulse Survey is designed to collect real-time
data on how small businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic inform federal
and state response and recovery planning. Phase 2 includes updated content on
the rehiring of laid-off or furloughed employees, working from home, use of
online platforms to offer goods or services, and changes in capacity of the
business. The second phase expands the federal assistance questions to
include tax deferrals and credits as well as the Federal Reserve’s Main
Street Lending program, and asks businesses about future program needs. Data
are available through the Small Business Pulse Survey Interactive Tool
and downloadable files. Results. Weekly Business Formation Statistics — The
U.S. Census Bureau is releasing weekly business application data at the
national and regional levels in addition to releasing the quarterly Business Formation Statistics (BFS). First
released in February 2018, BFS tracks trends in business applications and
formations at the state, regional and national levels. The weekly data
provide timely and granular information on the state of the economy but
appropriate caution is required in interpreting fluctuations since
high-frequency weekly data are subject to variation from seasonal factors
including holidays and beginning and end of calendar year effects. The Census
Bureau publishes the weekly BFS series at the national, regional and state
levels each Thursday by 12 p.m. EDT. Facts for Features Veterans Day (Nov. 11) — On this day, the nation honors military veterans with
parades and other observances across the country and a ceremony at the Tomb
of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. Some of the
statistics from this day include the number of veterans in the country, their
racial and ethnic backgrounds, and the number who vote. (Tentatively
scheduled for release in October.) Holiday Season — This festive season, or simply the holidays, is a time for
gathering and celebrating with family and friends, gift giving, reflection
and thanks. To commemorate this time of year, the Census Bureau presents
holiday-related facts and figures from its collection of statistics.

Count 99.7 Percent Complete — Oct. 6 — As of Oct. 5, 2020, 99.7%
percent of housing units have been accounted for so far in the 2020 Census
through either self-response or Nonresponse Followup. Final numbers indicate
that in 2010 a little over 99.6 percent of households were counted this way. Census Bureau
Statement on Oct. 1 Court Ruling — Oct. 2 – On October 2,
2020, the message below was sent to census takers working on the 2020 Census: “As a result of court orders, the October 5, 2020 target date is
not operative, and data collection operations will continue through October
31, 2020. Employees should continue to work diligently and enumerate as
many people as possible. Contact your supervisor with any questions.” Demographic School
Enrollment in the United States: 2018 — Oct. 7 — The U.S. Census
Bureau released the report “School Enrollment in the United States: 2018”
that examines the characteristics of people enrolled in school at all levels
using statistics from the Current Population Survey and the American
Community Survey. The report outlines the current picture of education in
America from kindergarten, first through eighth grade, high school, college
undergraduate and graduate students, and discusses how the latest numbers
compare with historical levels. Economic 2019 Annual
Survey of Public Pensions — Oct. 6 — The U.S. Census Bureau
released a supplemental unit file and public use file for the 2019
Annual Survey of Public Pension. This file will provide the
first-ever detailed actuarial data for State- and Locally-Administered
Defined public pension systems in the Annual Survey of Public Pensions. 2018 State and
Local Government Finances Summary Report — Oct. 1 — The U.S.
Census Bureau released a summary report of the 2018 Annual Survey of State and Local Government
Finances. This survey shows revenues, expenditures,
debt, and cash and security holdings by level of government. Level of
government includes state, local and state and local combined. The statistics
are organized by state. Manufacturing
Day — Oct. 1 — The U.S. Census Bureau joined a group of public and
private organizations for the ninth annual celebration of the manufacturing
sector of the nation’s economy on Oct. 2, 2020. The Census Bureau releases
manufacturing statistics that inform the public, businesses and policymakers at
the local and national level by painting a picture of the state of this
important economic sector. The tip sheet

manufacturing data. Business
Dynamics Statistics — Sept. 30 — The Business Dynamics Statistics
provide annual statistics on establishments, firm startups, and job creation
and job loss from 1978 to 2018 by firm size, firm age, industrial sector,
state, metropolitan statistical area and county. These statistics provide
snapshots of current and historical U.S. entrepreneurial activity and
geographic and NAICS industry detail about where jobs are being created and
lost in the U.S. economy. 2018 Annual
Capital Expenditures Survey – Capital Expenditures for Robotic Equipment
— Sept. 30 — New annual data by kind of business that provides additional
detail to the national level estimates of measuring investment in
machinery and equipment. Capital expenditures for both industrial and service
robotic equipment were collected for the first time on the 2018 Annual
Capital Expenditures Survey (ACES). The new ACES tables provide
national-level estimates of capital expenditures for robotic equipment by
2-digit NAICS sector and select 3-digit and 4-digit NAICS industries, and new
charts provide national-level estimates by size distribution and by
share of firms by size for select 2-digit NAICS. U.S. Census
Bureau Releases New, Interactive Monthly State Retail Sales Report
— Sept. 30 — New experimental data product featuring modeled state-level
retail sales. This Monthly State Retail Sales (MSRS) report is a blended data
product combining Monthly Retail Trade Survey data, administrative data and
third-party data. Data will be available for year-over-year changes for Total
Retail Sales excluding Non-store Retailers as well as 11 North American
Industry Classification System (NAICS) retail subsectors. This experimental
data product provides data by state and NAICS codes from January 2019 — June
2020. These state-level retail sales data are often requested by our data
users. Advances in both statistical modeling software and access to selected
third-party data allow us to produce and release these data as experimental.
(First release scheduled Sept. 30 and will continue on a monthly basis.) Quarterly
Survey of Public Pensions — Sept. 25 — The Quarterly Survey of Public
Pensions is a quarterly survey that provides national summary data on the
revenues, expenditures and composition of assets of the largest defined
benefit public employee pension systems for state and local governments. This
survey currently consists of a panel of 100 pension systems, which comprise
88.4% of financial activity among such entities, based on the 2012 Census of
Governments. Facts for Features Halloween: Oct.
31 — Oct. 7 — Halloween, which dates back to Celtic rituals
thousands of years ago, has evolved into a community-based celebration
characterized by child-friendly activities such as trick-or-treating and
carving pumpkins into jack-o’-lanterns. In the spirit of Halloween, this
edition of the Census Bureau’s Facts for Features presents a wide array of
new and updated statistical information. American Indian
and Alaska Native Heritage Month (November) — Oct. 1 — To
commemorate American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month, the Census
Bureau compiled a list of statistics about the American Indian and Alaska
Native population. America Counts: Stories Behind the Numbers America Counts
tells the stories behind the numbers in a new, inviting way. We feature
stories on various topics such as families, housing, employment, business,
education, the economy, emergency preparedness and

Census Bureau remains committed to a complete and accurate count of people
living on tribal reservations. In the last census, the American Indian and
Alaska Native population living on reservations was estimated to have been
